Sommelier Journal

(NV San Leonardo 30 Year Old Tawny Port) Bottled in 2008; there was only one pipe of this wine, which originated in 1972. Dark-amber-colored with a golden edge, it offers a delicately perfumed nose of ripe peach, dried apricot, almond paste, and golden raisin. Although delicious at cellar temperature, it gains heft as it warms up; I like it served cool, but not cold, to maintain the lovely acidity while the smooth, creamy texture comes through. The complex palate is filled with dried fruits, pralines, ripe nectarine, and lush caramel. The finish is nothing short of incredible, with a lingering and complicated aftertaste that rivals most great Madeiras. This tawny was even better the second and third day after it was opened—maybe the finest 30 Year Old Port, period, but I’d certainly like to try it side by side with the Vista Alegre in a taste-off.
