Community Tasting Notes 6

September 17, 2017 - Excellent, drank at Bird Dog, gained over time during decant. Picked up some needed weight (felt quite light-bodied for a GC straight after opening). Pure, classic, still in its youth.

July 30, 2014 - Dinner with Friends (Sun Wah BBQ - Chicago, IL): Picked a bad day to open this bottle me thinks. Had about 2 hours of decanting when it needed 5-6. Color was a bit odd too with heavy bricking and a distinct brownish hue to the whole thing. Aromatics didn't offer much throughout the night, but at times a meaty note came forward. The palate was stern, tense and dark. This needed a lot more time either in the decanter or the cellar...and sadly, I don't have any more of these lying around!

July 30, 2014 - Impromptu Dinner at Sun Wah (Chicago, IL): Another unicorn hunted down and consumed. This wine had a very bizarre brownish colour that was very advanced for its age. On the other hand, there was nothing cooked or stewed about the bottle. The nose had a lot of meaty and herbal elements, which carried through onto the palate, which also showed a very herbal (one of us described it as Robitussin) character. This probably needed a full day of decanting (instead of the 2-3 hours it had). Fleshy but austere. A little hot on the back end.

January 18, 2014 - BWC 2014 - The Grand Crus of Chambertin: Gorgeous. Like a jewel. Immediately appealing for the richness of fruit and flower on the nose (although one taster rightly pointed out that there is specifically chicken sh*t that emerges with time). The wine feels perfectly built. Harmony of structure and fruit and acid and mineral and the texture is noble and silky and the whole thing is just a perfect circle. And no where near its apex either - not even into the secondary yet. If I had more of this, I would wait as long as I could over the next decade.

February 12, 2011 - La Paulee Gala (New York, NY): Lots of exciting red fruit aromas and modest spice. A bit of new oak and assertive acidity slightly protrude today, but the wine will be powerful and complete for a very long time.
