September 26, 2013 - Coffee, plum, and brackish tea. Still a full wine, but a little on the flat side.

October 12, 2010 - Quotations by Luca Speri

"Sant' Urbano is the same vineyard as Amarone. And this is considered one of the best vineyards in Valoplicella. 350 meters above sea level, no humidity, good drainage, and because of all of this the yield is very low.

"Compared to the basic val. this vineyard doesn't need to be green harvested and is fundementally balanced, good tannins, and very good strong skin.

"This is considered one of the wines that change the history of val.pol. The first vintage is 1980, and it was made by my father to show that the wine could be more than just something simple and bad.

"Sant'Urbano as been owned since 1909 by us, and then we dry the grapes for this wine 20 days before wine making. We loose 4-5% by volume but it gives complexity to the wine. So it gives a wine that you can drink and has good structure, body, taste, and starts from the begining of the palate and goes to the end.

"This is 2005 and its still very fresh and can be kept 10 more years. 2 years aging at the winery in tonnae, new and not new. We change the wood when there is no maturation to the wine. So we change when the wood needs to be changed. Then afte rthe two years we keep in cellar one year to freshen it.

Very tasty, at $34 its a touch of stretch, maybe I could hit it, but maybe not.

February 19, 2010 - Perfect pairing with slow roasted veal with pineapple, cherries, benedictine glaze. Perfect pairing.

March 9, 2009 - Empson Brunello/Barolo tasting (University Club, Milwaukee): more of a liquid oak nose. vibrant aromatic nose, but again, too much wood all over this one. eh...?
