January 3, 2010 - It's probably not complimentary to say "extremely competent," but I thought this was simultaneously very good but not exceptional. Maybe more a function of my expectations than the wine (this was my first taste of a Bindi chard), although certainly possible that the vintage is in play here. This is a very well built chardonnay, perfect balance, just the right malo and oak. An interesting mix of old world style and new world fruit. Much to admire, but, for me at least, I guess it lacked the magic dust, that indefinable element that makes you sit up and say, wow. I guess I lack the vocabulary to accurately identify where between generic and unique this belongs. Somewhere right in the middle. Whatever the word for that might be.

August 18, 2009 - I had a great bottle of this in a Sydney restaurant a few weeks ago. That bottle had a tight nose but also great balance between fruit and acidity to prevent it from being the typical new world butterscotch fruit bomb. This bottle was a real disappointment as it was disjointed and lacked any sharpness.

(COMPOSITION Chardonnay BINDI) Bindi #2 Dear Friends, This wine is going to make a lot of friends this year. 2007 was the smallest vintage in the Macedon for many years, maybe ever. The tiny grapes were very concentrated but Bindi's reliably cool climate gave them natural acidity and minerality to match (in a similar fashion to some of the top 2008 Loire wines). Where the 2005 was a terroir vintage that has been tough to wrap your arms around (for many tasters) the 2007 is the opposite - it's a vintage of pronounced varietal fruit and forward purity with a delicate mid-palate sap and fine-textured stone quality (wrapped in deftly applied quercus maximus) that is enticing. Put the 2007 Composition Chardonnay up against your favorite $100+ US Chardonnay (or 1er from Chassagne) and watch the fun begin. For one-third the price, I think you will find much to admire in a bottle of this over something like Aubert. The 2007 Composition is another example that has widened the gap between Michael Dhillon and everyone else in this region. Michael is especially proud of this wine as it heightens the Composition to a level normally reserved for the Quartz but it can be enjoyed far sooner - between 3-8 years after the vintage: Jeremy Oliver: "Bindi is one of the best and most important vineyards in Victoria. Found just south of the town of Gisborne, it is planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on a variety of sites, soils and aspects. With increasing vine age now providing more underlying richness and complexity, its low-cropped wines are entering a new phase of excellence. Frankly, they are probably being helped by global warming, but there is no denying that for such a cool site, it is regularly achieving in its fruit a rare combination of richness, intensity and focus." Please note: We have very little wine this year - there just wasn't any to go around. After their cellar door and domestic clients were satisfied, less than 20 cases were left for export to the US (I'm not sure any is going to the UK or their other traditional markets this year). EXTREMELY LIMITED 2007 Bindi Chardonnay "Composition" It will ship at the end of the spring shipping season (weather permitting, late May).
