May 12, 2024 - This continues to be my favorite California wine and the 1997 is excellent
Starting to turn brick colored at the edge
The nose is rich dark red fruit with a hint of exotic spice. initially there is a hint of mustiness that blows off in minutes. Decanting is beneficial and the nose really struts after 30-45 minutes of air. by 2-3 hours the nose has gotten darker and richer. One of those wines you can just sit with the glass and your nose and contemplate
On the palate there is laser focused potent black cherry and black raspberry. With a couple of hours in the decanter it feels bigger, darker and richer, but is still restrained and not over the top. Black fruits take the lead with chocolate and a sweetness somewhere between dates and prunes . It retains its polish and sophistication throughout.
Blind I would have guessed this was a 5-10 years younger wine.
The finish is long and some tannins still persist, but I think this is drinking at peak right now. A fantastic bottle that my wife and I savored over the course of Mother's Day night

    January 28, 2024 - not blind
A bit declining. Still at a very high level but loosing some structure and precision. Some ripe fruits and tannins. I would not much longer. 95

December 31, 2023 - Enjoyed with my New Year's Eve dinner of filet mignon. This wine remains tasty and impressive. My notes from the past continue to hold true. I decanted for 1 hour and then served. Had to strain from the bottle due to a rebellious cork.

September 17, 2023 - Pausing for the Cause Fundraiser and Dinner (Obelix - Chicago IL): I can appreciate why others really like this rich and powerful black-fruited powerful wine, I just find it slightly less multi-dimensioned than great wines with this same volume. Still, very tasty indeed.

December 25, 2022 - Late entry. Best California Cabernet I’ve ever had, bar none. Glad to have had the opportunity to try one. Served with ‘82 Mouton and ‘67 D’Yquem for Christmas lunch/dinner.
