June 1, 2023 - With the series finales of my two favorite shows ending Sunday (Barry & Succession) I thought it was so appropriate to have my last bottle of Copain. What was so immediately striking was this was never in danger of fading or being over the hill. I wouldn’t go so far as youthful, but at 16 years in, I’d guess this would plateau on this plane for at least another 5 years, perhaps more. Within this maturity, the balance is in perfect, nothing poking out or out of place. The deep JB fruit is almost elegantly woven into the wines fabric, adding a little touch of sage, and then closes with a good balance of tannin and acid. Goodbye Old Friend.

June 10, 2022 - Blind: Guess syrah and thought it was an 2007 Pisoni Estate.

This is showing some aging, not bad. Nose is plum, rubber, and smoked meat. Hello syrah. Palate showed tar, sausage, iron and salinity. Medium plus finish. Very good.

June 9, 2022 - Bookclub--Wines Tasted Blind (Foretti's in Corona Del Mar): My final bottle, and I held onto this for a long time. Last night, I paired this blind with another 2007 Copain Syrah, the Brosseau. In contrast, while I found the James Berry still having good power and concentration, I find the alcohol and density too much for me. Dark fruit, olive, bitter chocolate, a stony note from the soil. I don't think the wine is fading and has a long way yet to go but I simply think for my palate now (and over the years I have opened nearly a case of the James Berry), the Brosseau is just better balanced, nuanced and without all the heft.

June 27, 2021 - Enjoyed with homemade pork stew. Elegant, deep and gorgeous, probably drinking at peak.

January 15, 2021 - Horrible cork; crumbled to bits. Strained through paper, decanted. followed over two evenings. The wine is in fine shape, with blood and orange peel dominating the boysenberry profile. An elegant expression of Syrah, but this will not improve. Might as well drink now.
