Thankfully as the ridiculously tiny cork was pulled from its tightly sealed home for the last 65+ years a flawless bottle was revealed. Whilst it's unlikely I will get to drink this wine again I would strongly recommend this being decanted many hours before it is due to be served. The structure and the tannins are almost unforgiving for at least the first hour. Don't get me wrong, you know the fruit is there it just doesn't fully reveal itself for quite some time. In fact it wasn't until the next morning when I tried the last remaining drops from the bottle that the true sweetness of fruit that you would expect from a mature 65 year old wine really showed. A genuinely historic wine experience for me, made all the more significant by drinking it yards from where it was born.
