Apparently the blend this vintage included 40% Cabernet Franc which is perhaps why it lacked the backbone of some of the other vintages we tasted.

  June 12, 2017 - Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Dinner with Erin Chave (RPM Steak - Chicago IL): Bonus bottle served blind. Slightly madeirized but nicely drinkable and even enjoyable with fully mature black fruit and slightly sweet spice and cigar.

  August 27, 2016 - From a literally perfect bottle, this wine had a red/purple center and just a touch of tawny orange at the rim. The high- intensity nose showed mostly currants at first. However, after a couple hours in the decanter it displayed currants, clove, anise, and California red dust.
  
  In the mouth, this wine medium bodied with notable rounded tannin and firm acidity. It had the huge California cabernet fruit juiciness. However, the complexity of the flavor profile was what you might find in a mid-level Bordeaux wine.
  
  This wine is going strong and will last for at least a decade. However, I doubt it will get better.

  August 6, 2016 - From a high shoulder bottle, this wine had a deep red center and orange rims. The medium+ intensity nose displayed currants, chocolate mint, cherries, and soil.
  
  In the mouth, this wine was pretty refined at first but slowly built up intensity over about 2 hours in the decanter. While it was never a block-buster, it had lovely integration, rounded tannin and good length. It was not wildly complex but it was attractive and certainly not mono-toned.
  
  This wine it at its peak, so drink ASAP. However, it is likely to stay at this level for 5+ years.
