Community Tasting Notes 10

November 27, 2014 - The Great Barolo Tasting (Taberna): Yet another Pio Cesare that over-delivered when served blind - this was very quite delicious. It had lovely nose, with earthy, mushroomy truffles and meaty accents on a bed of dark fruited aromas, and then drifts of lifted spice, bramble and floral notes. The palate had a clean, bright feel to it, with lovely acidity and fine tannins running through pure, sweet red fruit expression. Maybe not the most complex, but there was a nice focus and a harmonious singularity about the wine that made it really delicious to drink. Nice finish too, again, with lots of clean red fruited notes touched with spice and herb, all buoyed by a stream of juicy acidity. Very yummy, and drinking well now. It has the structure and balance to hold for quite some time to come though.

January 31, 2014 - terrific nose, licorice, autumn forest, mushrooms, herbs, still some tastable acidity, not much fructorious aromas, only hints of blackberries, a lot more other aromas like spices, tobacco, licorice, leather, smoky, Steak?, midweight+ body, very harmonic, long+ aftertaste, well cellared this wine can be kept for a lot more years, stunning bottle, 91- 92+?

  • niloc36 Does not like this wine:

November 28, 2013 - Quite brown -- even for an old Nebbiolo. Unpleasant damp, dirty earth smell with only a hint of the traditional "tar and roses." All the fruit and pleasure in this wine has dissappeared but there are ample, biting and highly astringent tannins. These are the sort of tannins that will never resolve themselves. A very dissapointing (Thanskgiving) bottle -- and I adoe older Barolos! I purchased it from a reputable retailer and stored it correctly for almost 20 years. It may be an off bottle, so I haven't given it a score.

June 14, 2013 - purchased this bottle by auction, healthy colour, popped and poured, in the glass real matured colour, at first a little austere, then with an hour of air this wine evolved beautifully in the glass, reall complexness, cherry fruit and mineralic hints, some spices, will develop for some years more, long+ finish

February 2, 2011 - Lovely nose, quite floral but yet mature. On the palate it was divine. Complete, full and yet with a lively acidity. Showing well and nicely mature but not declining.
    Lovely wine.
