Community Tasting Notes 6

January 25, 2013 - Red cherries and plum on the nose, with an oaky or cedar note and a lot of alcohol. Medium-full body, dark and nearing opaque. Dark fruit on attack, but not enough to be called a "fruit bomb," yet not subtle either. A bit of the "Dry Creek" dusty character, along with some black pepper spice, and a hint of green pepper, but also a gamey quality too that was not in keeping with a Dry Creek Valley Zin. Definitely missing the Zinfandel spiciness that I look for, which made me second guess how much Zin was really in this. Strong tannins, not much acidity, and a bit flabby and muddled in the middle. Others have called it "off balance" and I would agree. I'll give the winery more chances since they have a good reputation, but this one was a miss for me.

July 12, 2010 - I love this. Cinnamon, wet earth, dark chocolate. Beautifully balanced.

May 23, 2010 - Dinner - Laurie, Randy & Holly: Elegant, refined Zin. This isn't a blast of fruit but shows complex cedar, some ripe plum but all subdued. It's balanced for food with an attractive brightness. Good wine that is still slightly unsettled. Hold short term. Taste again.

February 18, 2010 - Ripe cherry, plum and cedar all play different roles on this one, creating a wine that's too off balance. Add to that a hot finish and I think I'll pass on this one the next time around. Unfortunate, though, because I do think Quivira is putting out some decent wines, just not this one.

NOTE: this bottle sent to me as a sample from the winery.
