April 3, 2021 - We feared opening this bottle. 17 years old and not a big name. This is still drinking well! Glad we overcame our fear.

March 15, 2014 - Wow, this wine finally woke up. Chewy gritty tannins finally subsided. Fruits now come out balanced and fresh. Some acidity in the back end, with classic Cali cab profile and finishes with mild tannins. Friends enjoyed it very much as well. Why did it take 10 years for this cab to present itself? Not quite the profile or smoothness of the 01 or 02, but quite decent at this stage. But probably would not last long with these characteristics as it keeps changing every few years. This is probably the peak. Have not purchased Franciscan cabs since 05 due to the gritty tannic structures.

April 21, 2013 - Slightly past prime, but still quite drinkable. Decanted for two hours at cellar temperature

Some faint cherry and vanilla flavors, a bit tannic. Not my favorite Franciscan.

February 27, 2013 - Has improved over the past two years. Still not fully balanced with muted fruit and some vegetal notes. Some freshness do come through with very chewy tannins. Drinkable with food and seems to get better and more decent after an hour or two with air. Recent scores from 2010 and 2011 have been poor, yet earlier scores in 08 and 09 were better. Did something happen after a few years to change the character of this wine to that extent and get out of balance? I have been a big fan of this Cab, notably 2001 and 2002, very smooth classic Cali cabs. Both were in my favorite selection, but 04 and 05 have been big disappointments.

(FRANCISCAN CABERNET SAUVIGNON) #2; COLOR-dark; NOSE-little baby Oak Monster (not bad); extreme Vanilla component; beautiful strawberry component & really nice coffee; TASTE-really dry wine; nice firm tannins; little more Bordeaux-like than the Justin (subtle & polished); nice coffee/mocha covered strawberry component; Vanilla; some bark action; little Maple wood; a few ants; very focused & serious, but not as voluptuous & exciting; so it depends on your taste; very well-made ; GV-89+
