July 7, 2023 - I’ve made the observation that I’ve never had a bottle of Lafarge that’s “ready to drink” on many occasions in my wine career. And for the most part this has been true (same for Barthod if I’m being honest). For Kevin Smith fans I’ve compared it to the fat guy in “Mallrats” who can’t see what’s in the 3-D poster. And much like him (figuratively) I’ve brought my lunch and a soda and I’m still staring. Which brings me to this 2008 Beaune Grèves. On opening there is a fine strawberry lushness with and undercurrent of finely wrought stone and a touch of sous-bois fine aromas of roses too. Great energy and a lifted finish. Then 20 minutes it’s as if a steel gate shut. Roses are rose-hips, all that strawberry fruit beat it out of Dodge and everything is showing all pinched and inscrutable. And once again, I’m standing with my lunch staring in vain at a 3-D poster, not quite knowing what I’m looking at. First half hour was magnificent, tho.

    TL/DR: Hold

July 7, 2023 - This wine has matured more than I anticipated. I always think of 2008 reds as long agers, but this one is showing lovely (near full) integration, light tannins, and gentle acids. A very balanced package that is silky and red-fruited with a touch of sous-bois. Enjoyed this over a few courses at a restaurant and was very happy with how the wine shows today. My friend who was dining with me had recently tried a 2011 Lafarge Volnay, which he did not enjoy and found "weird" (which does not surprise me with the oddball 2011 vintage). He considered this wine to be a big step up from the 2011 experience. No detectable signs of decline on this 2008, so no huge rush to drink.

October 7, 2018 - Wow this was sexy, beautiful light ruby, tons of red fruit, love the style and the vintage

March 8, 2017 - Miscellaneous Wines with Friends During La Paulée Week-Burgundy and Others; 3/8/2017-3/11/2017 (Various Dining Spots, New York): Pale red. Beautiful nose of blue fruit and soil. Gentle, harmonious mix of these 2 elements on the palate as well. Not as austere or high acid as some of these '08's. Very nice wine nearly fully mature.

January 20, 2013 - Drinking well after two hours of air. Ripe red fruit, spices and soil tones. Wonderfully fresh and balanced. Worked amazingly well with a spicy chicken-cheese soup.
