June 20, 2022 - Tannins fully integrated. Some lead pencil nose, leather back palate. Red and black fruits forward but Earl Grey notes. Mature, but not dying, more primary with secondary notes, nothing tertiary. An excellent pairing with blackened cowboy ribeye. It will never have the great precision of a Cote Rotie, but this is a paradigmatic Aussie Shiraz. Save for Grange and the best Torbrecks, it doesn't really get better. Unlikely to improve from here; drink up.

February 7, 2022 - Deep purple with no obvious signs of age. Campfire notes with sweet dark cherry, blackberry, blueberry, Indian spices and a bit of dried orange rind make up the complex nose. Showing vibrancy and tension with a cornucopia of blue and dark fruits cutting a broad swathe across the palate. This drank much younger than expected and I only wish I had given it a few hours of air before we polished it off. Suggest standing upright for a day and pour carefully to avoid some chunky sediment. Truly wonderful stuff.

February 12, 2021 - WOW!!! One of the most interesting wines I’ve drank over the last few years! One of those you should be drinking by using a dropper, not via a glass! Decanted 60 minutes in a wide-bottomed decanter first. The aromas have a medium intensity but when they set into your nose they’re more complex and beguiling than anything encountered before. Spasms of orange zest, camphor, cherry pie, gum tree, creosote, baked sweet potatoes n brown sugar, bramble, umami, bubble gum, pine, Copenhagen, charcoal, cinnamon, and about 5-10 other smells. So fascinating!

On the palate, similar flavors/senses as the nose but they are some of the greatest intensity of any wine you’ll encounter. Lots of syrupy sediment so stand it up a few days first if you can, which unfortunately I didn’t, but that’s ok. It has a medium-plus body, medium-plus acidity, plush resolved tannins, full-minus flavor strength (which is most awesome), with a long, lingering, thought-inspiring finish. It’s in the middle of sweet & dry with just an occasional leans towards some sweetness, more like mirages of some sweet...nothing real though. Seems like it’s peaking and will evolve for another 5 years. This beauty might be able to last to 2030 or so and I would LOVE to check in on it then.

I encountered this on a sort of a flash-sale from an established SoCal retailer, having never tasted the wines before. At USD$80, this is a GREAT QPR as I could see paying $250 for this. So glad I took a punt and have one more of this and another of a nearby vintage. Too bad I didn’t buy all of them! SEEK OUT!

December 7, 2020 - Deep purple/red color. Aromas of blackberries, blueberries, dark chocolate and lavender. Highly extracted, dense fruit in the mouth with great depth and length. Thick and powerful on the palate but not heavy. A truly impressive 19 year old Australian Shiraz!
