October 29, 2022 - Blind. Deeper than the 58 Riscal, more red, ruby even. A brightness. Surprisingly rich fruit on the nose, even some raspberry coming through. Then as it starts to open up there’s a worrying cardboard note and the fruit suddenly seems a lot more mute. Oh no, corked. After another Pe 30 mins or so and a top-up pour, it feels a lot fresher again and the damp cardboard note appears to have gone. Bottle stink? Either way, it’s turned out to be an excellent bottle. As ever, it’s individual bottles rather than the wine per se at this age, and it turned out to be a really excellent example at 67 years old. ****

September 24, 2021 - 10 of 10 This bottle had good color and clarity. Very musty upon opening. Decanted for sediment and left for 30 minutes. Nose was dominated by earthy tertiary notes. Palate was better still had some fruit… better than the bottle in early August but not nearly as enjoyable as the earlier bottles a few years ago.

August 5, 2021 - 9 of 10. Unfortunately this bottle was very tired, not sure if flawed or over the hill. Too bad the bottles from a few years ago were quite impressive

July 24, 2020 - Drank alongside a 1952 Cune. This was a fun pairing of birth year wines. Clearly demonstrating the longevity of Riojas. Both were in very good shape for 65 and 68 year old bottles.
I have had several of these over the last five years and this was one of the better bottles. Deep color, lots of leather and iron on the nose and palate, still showing some underlying darker fruit, nice texture and good balance. Both of these wines held up well throughout the evening, as did the two birthday boys 🎂
