October 21, 2019 - My last of 4 bottles scored at auction. These 4 ranged from okay/past peak to amazing, and luckily the last one was best.

Definitely on the backside of peak, but still plenty to offer. Brown sugar, plum, and hint of smoke, on the nose followed by rich black raspberry, more plum, and just a bit of char on the palate. Fantastic texture, no heat, long finish.

The same auction pickup included 2001 Thompson and 2002 Melville Syrahs. One of the ‘01 Thompsons was incredible, the rest were so-so. Overall the ‘03 Melville’s were showing best.

May 2, 2019 - Oh wow. Smokey black and blue fruit nose, herbs, black licorice, the slightest gamey Syrah funk. On the palate, expressive cherry, blackberry, savory. This is exactly where you’d hope this wine would be at age 16 - softened up but never limp, just a bit of tannin to frame it and acid to keep things fresh. Integrated and in harmony. Wowza!

March 11, 2019 - Huge Syrah. Big fruit, endless finish. On the down slope but still amazing.

November 24, 2018 - Found 3 bottles hiding at Ed’s Fine Wine and bought on Mootsie recommendation as others reported this wine as over the hill. And holy smokes! This is as good as Mootsie reported. Still has plenty of bones. Pretty much pnp but opened up a bit after a short decant. Inky dark fruit, low acid, great finish. Not as good the second day.

February 25, 2018 - Best bottle so far of these. The nose is dried cherries and strawberry. On the palate is fig, Christmas spices and fruit cake. With air black licorice and eucalyptus emerge. The flavors are now what I would consider “mature”. Drinking superb. Drink now.
