November 21, 2023 - At this point this wine is at a great point. A rich nose of dark berries, smoke. The palate is a bit chewy, with a minerally tight quality amidst the well-developed fruit. Not significant tannins left.

November 3, 2023 - Opened and drunk over two hours, Zalto burgundy glass. After some air it is floral and sweet as well as cranberry sour. Tannic but tannins are on the sweet side, so great to drink now with food. I agree with ROBMCL920 who describes it better than me. Auction price is now more than ten times the price 12 years ago.

September 30, 2023 - Burgundy-like aromas with strawberries and some earth, but also flowers and other Nebbiolo indicators. Feminin and elegant for a Barolo, with good intensity and length.

September 30, 2023 - The '06 Monvigliero is in its prime at the moment. It's a beautiful wine, not nearly at the quality level of the recent vintages, but it still has the stunning whole cluster aromatics, sweetness, and finesse that distinguishes this wine.

The nose was intensely perfumed with smoky red fruit, candied red roses, sweet spices, and earth. It's very obvious this is a whole cluster wine, and I think the whole cluster aspect sticks out more in this wine than the more recent vintages, where there is greater complexity. On the palate, the first impression is of wild herbal tones, reflecting the stem influence, with smoke, earth, and sweet red florals showing up second, and just a bit of red fruit in the background. Notes of earth, smoke, and red floral tones lingered on the finish. Acidity is medium to high while the wine has a lot of tannin remaining, with the tannins clearly less finessed than the recent vintages, but at 17 years of age it is quite drinkable. My impression is that the flavor profile of the wine is at peak, but well-stored bottles will likely show well for another 10+ years, perhaps benefiting from a bit more softening of the tannins.

This is such an enjoyable wine, especially for the aromatics.
