June 25, 2023 - This bottle was way past its prime. Decanted for about an hour and drank over 2 days. Day 1- overwhelming sweet raisin smell. Very cloudy brown color. Day 2 - undrinkable.

June 21, 2022 - Burgundies and Barolos (89 & 10 DRC, Clos Vougeot, Lambrays, and more) at Fig Tree (Charlotte, NC): Decanted 9 hours in advance – 30 minutes of air before back in the bottle uncorked until serving. No sediment, great dark ruby color, promising nose on the decant that never reach its apogee to my liking. This was easily the most polarizing wine as many people had this wine in their top three but people (like me who supplied the bottle) were less than satisfied with its showing. The wine definitely needed help (i.e. food with acid) as everyone who had tomato soup thought the wine was fabulous while those who did not have the soup were less enthusiastic. Nice primary flavors but stewed fruit and raisins. As expected this wine had more secondary notes but could have used even more air – or was my palate off since much of the table enjoyed the wine? I have a few more so we shall see.

October 26, 2021 - "Baby Masseto" and a Night of Nebbiolo through the Decades (Charlotte, NC): A truly amazing wine. Opened 7 hours in advance, decanted for one hour before back into the bottle. This wine was so powerful a couple more hours of air would likely have taken this wine to even further heights. Beautiful color -- slight bricking with a ruby and orange hue. Aromatic nose of soft raisins and plums. Rich, textured wine on the palate reveals a perfect balance between primary notes of red cherry fruit and earthy compote, and secondary notes of gentle cedar and soft spice. Long, fabulous finish. A wine you could savor and drink for hours on end and hope it never finishes. This bottle was comparatively youthful -- could easily have been mistaken for a 15-20 year old Barolo -- and could be expected to drink well easily over the next 10-15 years. I’ve never had a better Barolo. Four votes for “Wine of the Night.”
