P&P. I’ve always thought the Flying Pig was a bit of a wildcard in the Cayuse portfolio. It is usually pretty good, but on a occasion cabin be lights off spectacular - and often in vintages that may not be quite as strong for the Syrah line up. Last nights bottle was superb. The initial sips had a bit of the producers signature, I think that is pretty well documented - but it soon really did come across as very right bank (cab franc - merlot blend). The fruit was plummy but very elegant and really fanned out on the palate with some pretty serious length. When some floral - soil tones kicked in on the back half, it solidified this was a top shelf Cayuse bordeaux blend and likely the best version I have ever had. Still lots of life left if you open this gem.

April 20, 2023 - Purchased direct from winery & cellared since. Last of 3 bottles. PNP’d & monitored over 90 minutes. No Cayuse funk on the nose. Ruby red with slight bricking around the edges. Dark, briary, brooding black fruit on nose & palate. Somewhat overbearing. Not enough acidity to make this a balance wine, the 09 vintage I think. Some spice, floral, asphalt, smoke notes. Touch of Cayuse saline which helps. Note, my Cayuse sweet spot has always been the Syrahs & have the Bordeaux blends have always been 2nd fiddle.

January 30, 2023 - From memory over 3-4 different coravin'ed glasses. Good, but not a good QPR.

October 14, 2022 - This is my 5th tasting of the 2009 Flying Pig and the trend is not favorable. My last note stated that the nose was like a punch in the face. Very similar this time and I would say had gotten worse. I am well aware of the Cayuse funk, and that is the reason why I like them. But this was unbearable. The palate though does not match the nose and it is extremely tasty if you can get past the nose. I left this for about two days and revisited to a much more pleasant nose of sweet berries, mild coffee beans and tobacco. The taste was a little sweeter and overall a joy to drink. I made the mistake of saving a couple drops for a third day and it was a mess.

July 17, 2022 - Deep dark and chewy, currants, cherrys and plums. Finish just keeps going and going.

(Cayuse Vineyards Flying Pig Walla Walla Valley) Dark in color. The oak is a bit more prominent here aromatically than is often seen from the winery along with floral notes, cherry, tobacco leaf, spice box, and a pleasing herbal note. The palate is soft and velvety with more overt fruit flavors than often seen from Cayuse and tremendous purity. 60% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot. 163 cases produced
