December 2, 2023 - St Hugo Coonawarra Cabernet Vertical spanning 3 Decades (Merce's Castle): According to Cellar Tracker this is the 26th bottle of this I have consumed over the years and remarkably have not lost one to cork taint. Amazing! Again, under cork which came out in one piece and was in excellent condition just like the wine. Deep ruby in colour obviously showing its age, but unlike the 1993, had a very fruit forward nose with a savoury underbelly … walnut was observed by one drinker. Surprisingly for a 30-year-old wine a very fruit forward palate with dark chocolate and savoury oak which was mouth coating. Not overly complex but soft and smooth, finishing long with very fine tannins. Still drinking well but won’t improve with age but does have at least another 5-7 years before it starts to fade. Most in the group picked this in their top 2 of the flight which was surprising considering it was up against the 1996 and 1998.

August 1, 2019 - Beautiful on opening, gorgeous deep ruby colour with no hint of brown. Slight tannic odour that dissipated quickly (decanted briefly). Excellent cork (in fact perfect cork). Neck was down nearly to shoulder that was worrying, along with signs of heavy sediment trail but from first taste this is a great bottle with soft mature fruit, plum cassis and berries, very firm tannins at first but softening after 30 minutes or so. Could not hope for better at this age (25 years). I cannot remember being disappointed by this wine and still have several to go. Will be interesting to see how it holds up over a few nights, prospects are good.

March 18, 2018 - Brick colour. Nothing special on palate. Maybe needed some more air may improve. One dimensional.

March 20, 2017 - I tried two bottles. Both corks were still in good shape but one bottle was completely gone. The second is still drinking well but I'll make sure I drink the third and last one pretty soon.

May 8, 2016 - browning, bay leaf, and saltiness, beef, savoury, something familiar, but can't put my finger on it
