Community Tasting Notes 3

May 19, 2019 - A blend of Grenache (50%), Syrah (15-20%), Cinsault (10-20%), Carignan from a 1960s vineyard (10-15%) and Counoise (5-10%). Co-fermented and macerated for 10-14 days. Aged for 18 months in concrete. Bottled filtered but unfined. 13,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Quite translucent and somewhat developed pomegranate color with an aged mahogany hue. Rich, quite sweet-toned and slightly volatile nose with aromas of ripe strawberries, some wizened raisiny fruit, a little bit of pruney character, a hint of leather and a medicinal touch of ethery VA. The wine is full-bodied, ripe and sunny on the palate with juicy flavors of wizened dark fruits, some prune, a little bit of dried black cherries, light peppery tones and a lifted hint of sweet VA. The overall feel is medium-to-moderately high in acidity with quite resolved medium tannins. The finish is slightly warm with a little bit of gentle tannic grip and long, sweet-toned flavors of wizened dark berries, some dried black cherries, a little bit of juicy strawberry, a hint of peppery spice and a touch of bitterness.

A pleasant, nicely developed and sunny Côtes du Rhône that seems to be at its plateau of maturity at the moment. The wine feels moderately evolved and starting to exhibit tertiary characteristics, but is still far from falling apart. No need to age further. Good stuff, but the wine is still just a basic CdR, so while it has gained some nice aged complexity, it still feels relatively modest and simple a wine in the end.

September 17, 2011 - Dark cherry/sour cherry nose with salt liquorice, dark florals, garrigue and blackpepper.
Medium bodied and smooth palate energized by surprisingly refreshing acidity. Medicinal notes, meat, thyme, chocolate, graphite and stones. Long aftertaste without the usual heat of the region. Very good stuff.

January 25, 2011 - Tighter, more tannic and acidic than the immediately-drinkable 2007s were; probably could use a bit more age; but still a really nice QPR
