September 6, 2016 - Final bottle. Seven years is often a lovely age for Pinot Noir in general and for Ahr Spätburgunder in particular. This wine still displays abundant, youthful energy, but marries it to a modicum of age and complexity. The nose is open and expressive, with ripe strawberry fruit, spicy slate and warmth from the wood, hints of red meat and undergrowth, good depth; the palate is energetic and fresh, well balanced, medium bodied (13.5% ABV), bright and juicy, silky and with upbeat phenolics; long and engaging finish, complete and persistent. Delicious now and with another five years of positive development ahead of it.

January 4, 2016 - A faulty bottle. Not exactly cleat what's wrong. No detectable TCA, no clear brett infection, maybe a hint of acrolein. Whatever the root cause may be, there is a disturbing impurity that refuses to go away. Off.

July 28, 2014 - The '09 Blauschiefer has obviously improved when it comes to transparency and drinkability. What took a long airing to achieve a year ago, is immediately accessible now. A charming, lively spätburgunder with ripe acidity and silky smooth mouthfeel. Lots of pleasure here. Drink over the next five.

December 15, 2013 - We decanted the wine for 30 minutes before we poured the first glass. It was medium ruby in colour and offered mixed berries, cherry, blackberry, iron, liquorice, forest floor and some smoke on the nose. On the palate the wine showed mixed berries, cherry, mushroom, black pepper, liquorice and some smoke, paired with mild spiciness, medium-level acidity and tannin, a very good, rich mouthfeel and very good length. The medium-bodied wine kept improving with air. A great, rich, juicy, balanced Pinot Noir that offered a very good QPR. I would recommend decanting for two hours.

May 18, 2013 - Bit too malo-fudgey on the first night - better on the second. Nice wormwood, gunpowder and slate notes, sun-ripe fruit, balanced acidity, slightly oaky/spicy tannins yet not excessively so. This will only improve from here on, so we'll wait another year to pop our next bottle.
