Community Tasting Notes 10

October 3, 2023 - After tasting quite a few young Cavallotto wines (and teeth and tongue suffering the consequences), it was a privilege and an education to taste one with a bit of age behind it. The 1999 is considered by the winemaker to be a "classic" vintage. Dark ruby core with browning orange rim. The tertiaries just coming through (leather, truffle, meaty/gamey notes), but despite the young age it's still clearly evolving. Remarkable. Perfect acidity, gorgeous length, so rich and generous. It has softened, lost all the angularity of youth and is showing exquisite early maturity, although I can sense it's got two more decades of improvement ahead. Wonderful, just wonderful.

January 8, 2022 - It was hard to find any weaknesses in this wine and it is at a perfect age for this big a Barolo. Classic example of what a Barolo should be. Sheer pleasure.

January 1, 2021 - Not huge but big, very well knit together with layers of lushness that keep coming through long finish

January 23, 2016 - Wow. Decanted first and it definitely improved as the night went on. Extremely smooth yet complex. Cherry, briar, licorice and tobacco seamlessly integrated. Lingering finish. Time to drink. Still subtle fruit but won't improve further.

June 30, 2014 - Brought this to dinner at Phoenix Garden with Cellarid and the Flatiron guys. Unfortunately, corked and the saran wrap trick was worthless.
