July 5, 2017 - 100% Malbec, macerated for 20-25 days, aged for 12 months in French oak barriques. 13% alchol. Served blind.
Dense, concentrated, pitch-black color with a bloody rim. Concentrated, dense and opulent nose with tightly woven aromas of sweet new oak spice, mocha, concentrated dark berries, some developed raisiny fruit and pruney character, a little bit of earthy forest floor and a hint of vanilla. Massively full-bodied, chewy and textural on the palate with extracted and quite developed, yet very vibrant flavors of roasted spices, chocolate oak, mocha, peppery spice, some dried dark fruits, a little bit of raisin, a hint of crunchy chokeberry and a touch of leather. The wine feels quite modern, pretty heavyweight and really oak-driven with still impressive structure, relying more on the formidable, firm and grippy tannins than on the rather modest acidity. The finish is rather tightly-knit, heavy and grippy with long and powerful flavors of peppery spice, ripe blackcurrant and chokeberry character, quite a bit of toasty oak, a little bit of espresso, a hint of raisin and a touch of pruney dark fruit. The acidity shows a little through the sweet fruit flavors in the aftertaste, whereas the massive tannic structure makes the wine end on an astringent, mouthdrying note.
It took a while for people in the tasting to pinpoint this wine, but in the end, its black color and concentrated character were dead giveaways in retrospect. This is a super-massive and really concentrated Cahors that seems remarkably youthful - almost backward - for its age. Sure, the wine shows some nicely developed, slightly wizened and raisiny fruit character, but overall the wine is so massively structured, concentrated and oaky it doesn't taste at all like a wine at 17 years of age. I can't imagine how many years it will take for this wine to shed its baby fat, if it is still this massive - nor can I imagine how ridiculously humongous this wine must have been when it was young. A bit too modernist for me - at least for now - but still admittedly a very impressive and structured effort. Perhaps this wine will turn out quite nice once it loses its oak character - only that it can take another 15-20 years before the wine reaches such a phase. Not my cup of tea, but definitely recommended if big, oaky and opulent wines are your thing. -

January 12, 2015 - Clos Triguedina produce some of my favourite wines, but - having said that - the Prince Probus has been somewhat problematic over the years. Their website claims an extreme longevity which can be misleading, and their wines DEFINITELY are prone to "sleeping". Tried this vintage in 2013 and just couldn't extract any flavour from it - but my recent experience was a huge relief. A distinctive and flavourful nose, with leather, strong espresso and liquorice on the palate. Plenty of silky smooth tanins, just a hint of acidity, and elegant in every respect. A glorious wine but beware - these wines definitely have a dull period during development and need patience. Of course it all depends on vintage, and this one happened to be a cracker! A visit to the winery is also highly recommended. Life-enhancing stuff.

September 20, 2014 - Still quite a bit of tannin, spicy black fruits, good length. Will certainly keep longer although not sure if it will continue to improve.

June 20, 2014 - Excellent. Some bricking on the edges but still very black in colour, aroma of cassis and balsamic, a beautifully integrated palate with raisin, wild mushroom, blackberry, a bit of tobacco and fine dusty tannin that gives it a long finish.

December 25, 2013 - 18/20 * * * * 1/2 Coup de Coeur
VISUEL: rouge sombre, carmin foncé
OLFACTIF: nez absolument sublime: cuir, animal, fruits confits, balsamique.
