Thursday, February 15, 2024 - One off ($115, although bought at the same time as a ‘06 Solari) bought 2 days ago from yet another cellerage operation. On the nose and palate, rose petals, dark berries, black currants, plums, a hard to place red fruit note, red licorice, mixed dried spice, medicine cabinet, tobacco, graphite and a note of char. Deep garnet, medium to full bodied, thick legs. Intense acidity mostly integrating over time, medium tannins, no heat. VG++ complexity, persistence and intensity. Surprisingly thin and sharp out of the bottle, this settled down and filled out beautifully in 60-90 minutes, then has held consistently for 3 nights. Elegant and profound, with the racy acidity extending the delivery and providing lift, this doesn’t have quite the tannic backbone of the ‘08 and ‘09 (I am drinking it a year or two later, and it is an earlier vintage, so it’s not quite apples to apples, or grapes to grapes, as the case may be) but is a gorgeous drinking experience, excelling with pasta with truffle sauce, even working reasonably well with crabcakes, while drinking immaculately on its own. Suspect that this is mid peak drinking window, with several more years at this level, but improvement fairly unlikely. I’m not generally in the habit of popping wines I’ve bought mere hours before, but did so here because I was bidding on an auction lot of 4 of these I lost in the last moment. Too bad, because at around my price, this stellar wine is a stellar value. Long, very, on this bottling and Solaris in particular from the mid aughts through the mid teens. 95-96++
