Sunday, April 14, 2024 - First bottle from a half case purchased at the estate in 2021. Schloss Johannisberg's super-prestige dry white wine, aged for 30 months on the lees in a single 1200 litre barrel from the estate's own forest. The oaky, leesy style is certainly unique in the Rheingau, a throwback to how wines were made there a century ago. At present the élévage is still pretty dominant on the nose - the fruit and the minerality only show themselves with a lot of air and at a higher temperature. The palate is very compact, tightly wound, elegant and energetic but not very giving; the finish is long and tight, but with a welcome touch of that quintessental Johannisberg character. This is clearly designed for the long haul. Revisit in 2028.
