Sunday, July 24, 2005 - The majority of South African red wine is in my opinion mediocre to downright horrible. Kanonkop is the exception. You could almost mistake the 2000 cabernet for a North American Cabernet. It has a nicely floral and fruit forward nose, lots of black currant and vanilla. On the palate it's medium bodied but very classy and smooth, you could almost mistake it for a high quality Pinot Noir. Nice currant and berry flavors with a dash of clay/mineral and cedar/vanilla....good finish with adequate tannin structure. Incredible effort for a South African cabernet.
