Tuesday, June 1, 2010 - I've spent some more time with the '07 Mount Mary Quintet "not for sale" after opening one of the free bottles. The back label says that "it is not without merit", and I'd agree. There are some nice inputs from the winemaker - i.e. quality cedar oak, well judged - and with time decanting it fleshes out from what was, apart from the tannin, a rather thin palate.

It's a wine that if I'd paid $20-30 for, I'd be satisfied, although not too excited. There are elements to it that lift it above that category - the oak treatment for one - but on the other hand it lacks fullness and balance.

A well made wine from sub-standard fruit, but I'm sure many producers would be happy to release it as a mid-priced standard release. I'm also, unusually, picking up some Coonawarra-type notes in this wine. And not knowing what to expect from secondary buds, I can report that it's well ripened, and not in the slightest bit green.
