Saturday, May 14, 2011 - This was one of those bottles where I thought I might be on to something, but I had no idea about the potential upside of the wine. It was spectacular right out of the gate, then it became progressively more restrained and shorter over the next 45 minutes. It appeared that the wine was past its prime. Then, suddenly, it reversed direction and improved dramatically over the next hour to be as good (in a slightly different way) as it was when it was first opened. My notes relate to the wine at its zenith.

From a very fine looking bottle, with a 4 mm fill, this wine seemed sound. The wine had a light red center with substantial, light tawny rims.

The high- intensity nose showed sour cherries, coffee, raspberries, and anise. In the mouth, the wine showed ripe berry fruit, strong but round acidity, and impressive length. The strong acidic "zing" made it great with food. While it could have been richer in the mid-palate, this was an unexpectedly excellent treat!

This was also one of those bottles where I could really see the argument for not decanting off the sediments for Burgundy. They were so fine grained that they added an attractive dusty richness to the finish. They also "darkend" up the fruit in the mouth.

While this wine may hang around for a few years, drink'em if you got'em.
