Wednesday, January 11, 2012 - Wow! I could not believe it when a dear friend brought out a bottle of this for lunch the other day; the 1979 Cabernets (or Quintet as it later came to be called) is one of my all time favourite red wines.

Nose: Classsic Mount Mary of the era to 1980. Beautiful sweet vanillary oak and lovely mature red berries and gentle tobacco. Extremely seductive. Smelling this wine is a bit like falling in love; captivating and sensuous and demanding attention because you can't believe how good it is.

Palate: My favourite vintage of Mount Mary! Still fabulous, although it was better some years ago. Nonetheless, is maturing slowly and gracefully. Velvetty smooth (as always) and distinguished by a beautiful flavour combination of fully mature raspberryish red fruits / gentle tobacco characters and the best smelling, best tasting vanilla that I've tasted on any Australian wine. More charming and complex even than a recent superb bottle of another iconic Australian red, the 82 Wynns John Riddoch. I wish I could find wine now that tasted like the 79 MM did at its peak. (Any suggestions??)
