2007 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Southing

Community Tasting Note

Saturday, March 30, 2013 - From looking over my previous notes, I see that this wine just isn't coming together. After 6 years from vintage I'm going to stop making excuses for it, like the parent of a substance abusing child (these are problems our friends face, fortunately not us), and come to the realization that this wine is just not going to live up to the potential that I thought it would be.

Opened not decanted. Light and sweet blackberry juice on the nose. On the entry: sweet black and dark fruit with touches of charred oak; a pleasant but watery mid palate and ends with a drying dark concord / black cherry finish. Still tastes narrow and constricted. Also worrisome that the oak is coming through and the fruit is not showing more. Drink up or sell. Good to Good +.

3/30/2013 8:08:00 PM - Good review. You hit the nail on the head. I gave up on Seasmoke back in the '07 vintage. I don't know what's going on, but if you find out, let me know. Nearby Foxen has made far superior Seasmoke for the past 5 vintages....at far less cost.

5/4/2013 5:09:00 AM - The one time I had this wine I found that it was a wine of two faces: for the first hour after opening, my experience mirrored yours. After that, however, I found that it opened up and the oak - while still there and noticeable - did retreat somewhat in favor of some tart red berry flavors. All that said, this will never be a waif of a wine.
