90 Points

Monday, October 14, 2013 - Having just returned from Burgundy, this shows by contrast more of what Rhys is doing. This bottle is not far off the mark from what I tasted there from 1ers in the 09 and 10 vintages, and while this is more akin to a village wine, with the single vineyards in the 1er stable, color me impressed, even with my eurocentric, oak-phobic orientation. Definitely a new world rendition, but by this I do NOT mean "modern," just different and even more traditional than some growers I tasted there, especially in 09. This has a whole cluster orientation, and even a more earthy, 'lean' quality to it. Needs time for sure, but this seems to have it in hand - easily good for another 7 years - this shines a spotlight on the word 'balance.' Can't wait for the next decade when the single vineyards will be coming online. All about potential, and not just this wine, but the winery. Nice!
