Thursday, July 3, 2014 - From a bottle kindly provided by S.A.H., this wine was carefully double-decanted prior to serving at a pre-holiday party. Although somewhat crumbly, the cork was successfully extracted. The liquid from this particular bottle is deep garnet/amber and the nose shows complex aromas of pipe tobacco, saddle leather, spice and earth. There remains a modest amount of red fruit which lurks in the background. Medium-bodied and with melted tannins, the wine remains freshly acidic and the alcohol (listed as 13.0%) is seamless. Solid in the middle, it closes with a lengthy, spice-laden finish. While certainly enjoyable, this particular bottle is clearly in decline. Drink now.
