Sunday, November 9, 2014 - Originally a wine from the legendary René Collard in Reuil; after his death in 2009, De Telmont in Damery took over his stocks. 1995 was Collard's final vintage. 100% Pinot Meunier, disgorged 23 November 2010. The long ageing of the Meunier sur lattes, provides this wine with a quite unique character. The usual, abundantly fruity varietal character of the Meunier takes a backseat to an almost austere, yeasty freshness from the lees; the powerful palate is broad-shouldered and vinous, the flavours are not very detailed or expressive but there is a sense of the nutty richness I associate with Pinot Meunier; the somewhat estery finish is slightly short for a wine of these dimensions. Colour is lively and intense but young for age; lively mousse, fine bead. Not an obvious wine, quite intellectual rather. It does prove that Pinot Meunier will age.
