Sunday, September 9, 2007 - It is a treat to taste older Cali cabs. This helps us to demystify the ageing capability of this wine region. Deep red color with some bricking. The nose is initially dominated by a salty, soy sauce note. With some coaxing, dried red cherries and a caramel note emerge. Despite the age, the ripe caramel flavor places this firmly in California, not Bordeaux. Although this wine is fuller bodied than the 1986 Johnson Turnbull that I had last night, I don’t think much was gained from letting this wine age for 28 years. Aside from a fabulous 1975 Cuvaison I had last year, I have yet to encounter aprofound, aromatically interesting California Cabernet with more than 20 years of age. 89 points.
