Vineyard:

The grape source is the Beaune “Les Chouacheux” Premier Cru vineyard located near “Les Clos des Mouches” and Pommard “Les Epenotes.” The vineyard is planted with forty year old Pinot Noir. The soil is a mixture of clay, marl and red stones. The vineyard was severely pruned to a yield of two tons per acre.

Winemaking and Cellar Practices:

A violent thunder and hail storm struck southern Beaune, Pommard and Volnay on September 12 just as the grapes were nearing optimal maturity. The mature grapes were immediately hand-picked, sorted, and crushed. A similar hail storm affecting mature grapes occurred in Beaune in 1971. Jacques Lardière, the winemaker at Jadot made the best wine of the commune by shortening the fermentation maceration to minimize any possible goût de grêle—the undesirable taste imparted by hail damage to grapes. The Jadot wines were very successful and aged beautifully although somewhat lighter than normal in color.

We decided to follow the Lardière’s approach to prevent the possible development of goût de grêle. Following a short maceration and fermentation the must was basket pressed, settled and transferred to all new French oak barrels. After the completion of malolactic fermentation, the wine bottled by hand without racking, fining or filtration in January 2002.

Characteristics:

“Les Chouacheux” produces wines which possess exceptional fruit definition, combined with a richly tex­tured palate. Due to the shortened maceration, the wine has a fineness and elegance not usually associated with this site. The lighter color (Musigny visits Beaune) required that we label the wine as “Bourgogne”. The particular vineyard characteristics are reminiscent of ripe black cherries and exotic oriental spices. We have not produced a similar wine to date, which is perfect with Holiday Cuisine such as (smoked) salmon, (spicy) tuna, game, turkey and Burgundian cheeses (Citeaux, Epoisses and Chaource).
