Wednesday, January 18, 2017 - Decanted half an hour. Tinge of musty cardboard on initial opening but blew off to reveal a clean nose and palate. Dark brooding fruit on the nose, as well as violets, tar. Initially just a hint of nail polish remover which actually adds to the overall impression of freshness and vibrancy, though there is also just a tinge of alcohol sticking out, both of which mellowed out with further time. The palate shows a core of dark cherry and plus interwoven with tar and oak in a nicely balanced way. The tannins are starting to soften but are still quite gritty and plentiful, mostly cleaned up by a nice line of acid. The finish is reasonable though a little shorter than I was hoping for. Still time ahead for this enjoyable wine but it is quite pleasant to drink now.
