99 Points

Thursday, November 23, 2017 - Same as my notes from earlier this month. Wild and concentrated flavors, with a mid-palate that is incredibly intense. This and a '13 Tusk were tied for WOTN. The Tusk was much smoother (after about 2 hours) and showed a little bit more as a "complete" wine, but the Scarlett was an exciting wine with some rambunctious and powerful flavors that really held interest. It was fun to have both wines side-by-side and notice the different reasons I equally enjoyed both wines. The Tusk came off more sophisticated; the Scarlett was a more captivating wine due to its intensity and whirling array of flavors.

98-99+ points for the Scarlett. Hold for another year+.

11/24/2017 9:08:00 AM - CSIMM: As I think you know, I have not been a fan of McGah's Scarlett or reserve (but I did enjoy Quivet's SB). That said, because of your ratings, I purchased 2 bottles of the '15 reserve. Should I try a bottle or should I wait? I'm assuming if I like it, I can still buy more but might not be able to in 6ish months from now. On the other hand, I'd like to have a great experience with it! Feedback is appreciated!

11/24/2017 9:23:00 AM - It definitely has a kung-fu kick of flavors swirling around at the moment. It is one of those "it has a lot going on" types of wines right now. It does "need" a little bit of time to settle down, but if you're worried about checking to see if you like it (to potentially purchase more), you certainly could get a good feel for it now - give it a little air first.

You have a Coravin, correct? Maybe that's the best bet to see what's under the hood and if it jives with your flavor preference. What's notable in this wine is the concentration and mid-palate; really good push of flavors. The bigger question for you is if the flavors themselves are most agreeable to your palate. If you Coravin, I'd give it some time in the glass (some swirling) over the course of 15-60 minutes.
