Wednesday, June 4, 2008 - Pairing dinner at Tetsuya (Tetsuya's, Syndey): Served with a Spanner Crab Rvioli dish and a course of Barramundi. This is a style of new world Chardonnay that I really dislike (meaning big, and super buttery oak), but I must say that I found this wine really quite good. Green gold in colour, the nose just screamed of buttered popcorn, my initial reaction was "typical Aussie Chard - where is the fruit under all that new French oak?". The palate was really different though. I was immediately struck by the fantastic balance and finesse of the wine. Everything was in the right proportion, lovely sweet tropical notes of pineapple and citrus and a lilttle mineral, a full but very focused mouthfeel, just the right amount of acid and structure and a really long, satisfying, nutty finish with a touch of flint. Not one I would drink regularly for sure, but a good wine nonetheless.
