Saturday, August 24, 2019 - Mike Smith 2018s & 2017s - Myriad, Quivet, Scarlett, Becklyn, and others (Saint Helena): Much like the Myriad Twins, the standard Becklyn sample displayed fresh, ripe red and black fruit, albeit with a more reserved temperament overall at the moment. Complete, friendly, and with medium intensity from stem to stern, the Becklyn kept the mid-palate depth meter middle-of-the-road for now, picking up speed on the rear and finishing strong with lasting fruit and spice, as faint traces of booze linger as well. Usually a more outward-showing animal, the Becklyn this vintage seems to beg for a little time once in bottle to gain some additional weight.

But specifically in the case of the 2018, I found it to potentially need a couple of years to gain some additional depth. It's got the flavor dial turned up, but the true depth was in need of some assistance. I'd recommend a year or two from now, but if you are flamboyant-adverse, you may want to wait even longer. That said, I wouldn't lay this down for a decade or anything. 5-6 years is the max I'd cellar these wines personally.
