94 Points

Saturday, August 24, 2019 - Mike Smith 2018s & 2017s - Myriad, Quivet, Scarlett, Becklyn, and others (Saint Helena): Similar to the GIII with its red and black cherry and subtle chocolate-spice, but much more linear and clamped-down in its current state. It has sophistication and the potential stuffing for a wonderful flavor expansion down the road, but it’s gonna take a minute (or a few years) to really blossom. Despite its mousier demeanor at the moment, there is a keen silkiness that really helps to elevate the whole enchilada. Finishes focused and direct. Hold for a few years. 94+ points for now.

Well, I'll say first that it's difficult to put the 2017s in the same room with barrel samples from 2018 and try to pretend the 2018s don't dominate in so many ways. That said, considering the challenges of the 2017 vintage, there are certainly measured successes with these wines. I personally don't think we will be seeing a lot of "100-pointers" necessarily coming from that year. It just is what it is I suppose. As you said, relative to others in these respective price-points, these 2017s from Mike are as good as what we will likely see out of that vintage from the Valley.
