Saturday, July 31, 2021 - Nose: [58°] Tree branches and bark, dark green brambles, dark red berries and a soft spice that darts in and out. [64°] Aromas are much better integrated with just only a little bit of time and some room temp.

Palate: [58°] A rush of dark red fruits, earth bathed in hot sun with deep buried silvery graphite, similar brambles from the nose, and dry oak that has a bit of blood orange on it. Finishes with deep earth and pleasant river minerals. [64°] Flavors deepen and introduce some black fruits as it comes to room temp, black plums develop with time and the addition of steeped tea on the finish. The buried graphite really reaches up through the earth like a zombie with some time as well.

Attributes: Clear dark ruby. Dry with medium-plus amounts of strong, chewy tannin. Medium to medium-plus body with light acidity. Good finish of at least 18-20 seconds.

Thoughts: This was really good straight from the pour. Bold tannin, great flavors of earth and graphite enveloped by dark fruit. I love the dark green brambliness at the moment but I think that might be an aspect for a somewhat young wine (or not enough air time yet). Nothing time can't temper though, thinking 2-3 years and this should be even better. 96-97+

Other notes: Bordeaux glass. Poured one glass, emptied rest of bottle into a decanter at cellar temp ~55° for the duration of consumption of ~4 hours. Recommend serving ~60°-64° and decant for 2-4 hours at cellar temp as needed.

8/1/2021 9:24:00 AM - Great notes as always. Big fan of this wine. Might be my favorite Rutherford bottling at the moment. Rob said to jump on 19 as it might be the best bottle yet.

8/1/2021 10:45:00 AM - Thanks guys! Seriously, this was a GREAT recommendation Lite!

I agree MJP, I said the same thing! While tasting this, I was trying to recall a memorable wine from Rutherford.. didn’t have one, until now.

Also, are the ‘19s already out?! Don’t think I got an allocation. I tried looking for what Rob said to me, something about getting on the ‘18 waiting list but I can’t find it and my memory is failing me atm dammit. Would love to get some ‘19s

8/1/2021 11:08:00 AM - 19 Large format was released recently. 18 750’s will be in the fall.

8/2/2021 8:41:00 AM - To clarify, I think Rob bottles large format in advance of the release 750 release. Also, I think he keeps a good amount of library wines too.

9/28/2021 9:10:00 AM - Thanks for this note. I happened to open another one this AM.. didn't taste, but double decanted and will open it after 8 hours in the bottle. Had a little sediment, which interestingly didn't all get caught up in a coffee filter.

9/28/2021 9:12:00 AM - Sared- wow a ‘16 with sediment that was too fine for a coffee filter. Thanks for the heads up, will make sure I decant and keep it upright in advance!

9/28/2021 9:37:00 AM - It wasn't much, but it surprised me slightly as there were tiny clumps left in the bottle. I also poured out some of the haze and tiny clumps into the wine thinking filter would capture it, but it didn't look like it. But it was small and cab sediment, which isn't as bothersome.

9/29/2021 8:00:00 AM - SARED- wow that’s not a good sign… could the sediment have played a role?

  • Comment posted by SARED:

9/29/2021 11:40:00 AM - No. I don't drink that much Napa, and that's probably it more than than anything else. The sediment was very minor. I just remember the 1st bottle singing my tongue with fruit causing me to triple up, and that bottle just showed uniquely I think. It's a good wine, but maybe just not my thing. Won't score it.

10/3/2021 7:58:00 PM - Yes, more of a Bordeaux type. But I still remember that first bottle and being so WOWed. My wife too. It is perplexing.

A friend who recently visited Greer last month had a 15-17 vertical and said 16 was is favorite of the bunch.
