2018 Château Malescot St. Exupéry

Community Tasting Note

91 Points

Friday, March 4, 2022 - This was decanted for 4 hrs and tasted over 3 days. Very red-fruited mostly strawberry liqueur and raspberry, combined with a tobacco/spice note, alcohol a little bit protruding. This got smoother on days 2 and 3 (as expected), and was drinking nicely, but I think the 2014 is better. I tend to prefer dark-fruited Bordeaux, so if you like yours more on the Southern Rhone/Burgundian side of things fruit-wise, add a few points to my score ...

3/4/2022 7:55:00 AM - Very interesting perspective. I am really enjoying the ‘14, which as a general statement for the vintage for my palate is a rarity. When I tasted the ‘18 a few months back I felt it was more closed vs able to get a real sense for the flavor profile. I like you prefer darker fruits (although I do love Rhône when that’s what I am in the modd for) but didn’t leave with a red fruit impression. Will be very curious how this unfolds over the coming years as I have had a few other ‘18s that are already drinking so well, one of my favorites is from St Estphe no less. Thanks for your impression, makes me very curiosu.

3/4/2022 8:00:00 AM - This seemed very open (after a decant) as most '18s are seeming for me lately. I got such an unmistakeable pure beam of strawberry that I thought of Chateauneuf de Pape, but the tobacco note leaned Bordeaux. I like Ch Malescot a lot, but this seemed like a lighter style than I was used to from them; still, a very nice wine. I do hope '19 is a bit darker and deeper as I went in on a case of Futures on it given the great price.
I think I'll crack another 2018, maybe Lagrange, this weekend ... I'm enjoying the ride!

3/4/2022 8:10:00 AM - Love it. It’s been hit or miss for me so far, Mayney and Malescot but a grand slam was Calon Segur which was a WoW. Now I am trying not to peel through my Calon stash before I have a chance to lay any down they are that good right now. Oh well first world problems I guess.

I also went big on MSE 2019 & 2020. I am not concerned but am impatient. Cheers

3/4/2022 8:13:00 AM - Man, don't tempt me on the Calon, I have a few 750s and a magnum ... Must. Have. Patience :) But maybe I should crack one before it closes down? Shucks ...

3/4/2022 9:14:00 AM - I excavated a 750 of 2018 Calon to decant later ... Will send you an invoice :) haha I'll report in a day or two, as I like to give these wines at least 24 hrs to show their stuff

Make sure you try it throughout as we enjoyed it so much early on we never have it a chance to decant.
