Saturday, April 16, 2022 - Relatives gifted a Heitz Trailside Vineyard Cab of the same vintage to me years ago. I held Heitz waiting for the “right” time to showcase it. As the years went by, I’d been tempted to open it for one occasion or another but for whatever reason, held off. And with just a few days’ notice the same relatives who gifted the wine to me announce that they are coming to Virginia. What better time to pull this special bottle! (Heitz bottle number 15,383 of 41,316). The corks on both the Heitz and Togni (of the same vintage) crumbled using a waiter’s friend. The ahso worked on the balance of the Heitz but couldn’t save the Togni where the final half had to be shoved into the bottle and strained into a decanter. The Heitz was notably darker in color shading to plum with the Togni being more of a red brick. Both displayed noses of plum and cassis with appearances by cherry, mint, cedar, roasted tomatoes, and sweet herbs. The Heitz had more cassis while the Togni showed more cherry. The Heitz carried more weight and flash than the Togni, but the table was split over which wine it favored making for some interesting conversation. Both wines delivered long, rich finishes with the Togni giving more cedar on the finish and the Heitz delivering mint and mocha. Both wines are a treat to drink. Both show some sediment at the shoulder with the Togni throwing a bit more along the side and broader around the shoulder. Neither bottle specifies percent of alcohol (so 12%-14%) and likely between 12% and 13%. With giant grilled beef ribeyes as said relatives join us for Easter eve dinner after their big day at Poplar Forest. 04.16.22. Both Highly Recommended.
