Sunday, August 14, 2022 - I had the 2005 version earlier this year and this vintage is much better. Color is medium/light red with some crimson on the rim. Nose is funky with stewed fruits, cedar and cassis all very present with an underlying presence of oak that is nicely placed. On the palate, however, you get a sense on why this does not evolve into an elite wine - the style is all fruit driven and after 14 years, it just does not have the tannic structure to continue to integrate further. This vintage is at the very tail end of when it is still “good” rather than “interesting,” something that is a hallmark of these medium high-end California producers. They just simply make wine to be consumed soon and this is one such bottle. Nice wine now, but don’t wait.
