88 Points

Sunday, October 30, 2011 - Had this 375mL bottle while watching some good Sunday afternoon football at the condo - specifically, watching Tim Tebow, the biggest joke of a first round QB pick that I can recall, sucking it up against the Lions. I don't know if watching that bozo's clown show on the turf made this wine much better, but I just might have given it an extra point for the appeal of the situation in which it was drunk. As a disclaimer, I am a New York Giants fan, and have no stock in the AFC West in general; it is so amusing to me to see Tebow fulfill the experts' predictions though...

As for the wine... it makes me think of a pitcher who is right at the peak of his windup, about to deliver what looks to be a perfect strike. All of the elements are in the nose, palate, and finish, that one would expect from a Gigondas from such a full, ripe, and monumental vintage - garrigue, woody notes, kitchen spice, purple fruits, blueberry/blackberry, sweet cherry, a bit of olive, gaminess, nice minerality, and such. However, for the time being, these flavors are all bound into one tight package just waiting to develop into something more complex. This wine does have the tannic structure and acidity to lay down for a couple of years or more, and right now there is just too much energy bound into each sip. Enjoyable now, but this should greatly reward moderate term cellaring on the order of 2-5+(?) years.

88 for the wine - 89 if you include the Tebow debacle in the equation - with at least 2-3 points of upside potential. Great QPR at under $25 for a 750.
