Saturday, January 12, 2013 - Incredibly dark ripe blackberry from the start that carries through the mid palate with almost impenetrable depth. Rather brooding really. There's a vibrancy and youthfulness to the fruit but its clear almost immediately that the wine is in an awkward stage based on the lack of expressiveness of the midpalate. There's focus here but the wine is mute in critical places.

With aeration the wine picks up notes of violets, black licorice, cedar, iron and notes of herbs de provence. There are charred wood notes in places as well but the wine never comes together in a harmonious way. Over time the tannins come into the forefront and become fairly assertive while the fruit subsides. Overall, a very well constructed wine that simply needs more time. Like other wines around this age they're heading towards a closed phased. Despite the muted notes there's a precision to the acids and tannin which suggest the wine can continue to age without any fatigue.

Quality is very evident but the wine is in an in between stage. 92+ points in time and seems like a promising vintage. Would be a disservice to risk opening another bottle. Hold for another two to three years at least. Could be special when it wakes back up. If you must open a bottle consider a 2-3 hour decant.
