Wednesday, August 3, 2011 - I was keen to buy and try this after it scored 5 stars in Decanter (Sept 2011) tasting. This is a typically pure Clare rendition of Riesling with lime and some toastiness. It excels on the palate with moderate intensity and good length while maintaining both dryness and bright (but not over-bearing) acidity.
Much as I have a fondness for Clare riesling--and perhaps especially for Skillogalee which was the first Clare vineyard I visited over 20 years ago--I'm left unconvinced that they eclipse the best of Alsace even if the price is (usually) more modest. I have as my reference point the Z-H 05 Rangen de Thann which is on a different scale of size and complexity. But for the price the Skillogalee is delightful and is likely to evolve slowly but pleasantly over the next decade.
