Tuesday, December 21, 2010 - .................. wrong again! (I expected this to be the least satisfying of a trio of 1995, 1996 and 1988 LLCs opened this week. But it is delicious, better in my view than the '95.) Not decanted, but given 3 hours out of cellar at room temp. Wet cork all the way up, but no deterioration in the wine. Old-fashioned metal capsule has done its job well (not lead but heavier than modern capsules). Initially rather old-winey on nose and palate, slightly musty and gamey. But this blew off, leaving a sweet rounded wine, good black fruits, even a hint of the sweetness of over-ripe blackberries shining with gossamer after the first frost. No harsh tannins, no 1988 hardness, a really enjoyable wine; needs drinking in next few years. My memory is failing -- we opened six of these back in August with a very similar note. A very fine 1988.
