Friday, March 26, 2021 - Another one of our head to head Latour vs. Las Cases tasting events. This time, it was much too close to call. Up to this point, Latour has won most of the vintage comparison tastings that we have done. However, on this night LLC held its own against its first growth next door neighbor. Disclaimer: Served non-blind, both the Latour & Las Cases were decanted 1 hour prior. The Latour was purchased on-site from the Latour cellar directly in Pauillac and the LLC was sourced via local US retailer. The Latour wins hands down on the nose. I could smell it all night long without ever taking a sip. Sheer nobility with the classic Latour tension that I love so much once that tension is released in the glass. However, the LLC wins on taste and finish, especially the longer it sat in the glass. My guess is that ultimately the Latour is the better wine, but at this stage the LLC is more in its sweet spot and fully mature. If it were physically possible, I would love to taste the LLC exactly where it is today and the Latour in 5-8 more years of evolution. Nevertheless, it is always fun to taste these two side by side.
