Wednesday, June 19, 2019 - Every time I think Pinotage I think burnt rubber. I try really hard to not find this characteristic, but it's there every time. This is the least burnt rubber Pinotage I've ever had. It's there, undeniably, even dominant, but not as aggressive as other ones I've had. It's even pleasant (!!) The smokiness is not unattractive - almost like Côte Rôtie. Fortunately there are many other virtues as well: rich, deep, thick, almost treacly. Powerful. Still young. For sure this will age well. The fruit is intense and concentrated, and the wine has length and determination. Impressive and distinctive, although lacking freshness for my palate. How a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault, two almost completely antithetical varieties, produces this rather bizarre concoction is beyond my ken.
